Daniel Castro
Daniel Castro, born in Coquimbo, Chile, holds a degree in theatrical performance and is a director, set designer, and theater instructor with a long and distinguished career. For more than three years, he served as director of the theater ensemble at the Municipal Theater of Ovalle and taught theater and scenic exploration at the Bicentennial School of the Arts «Eliseo Videla Jorquera.»
One of his notable accomplishments as an educator was the creation of a theater group at the Provisional Detention Center of Ovalle, an institution dedicated to the custody of individuals under pretrial detention. Additionally, he founded a theater workshop at the Drug Rehabilitation Treatment Center «Monseñor Óscar Romero Martínez.»
In 2012, Daniel founded the Almendra Theater Company, through which he has staged eight productions focused on research, education, culture, and heritage. Among these are «El pescador y su mujer» («The Fisherman and His Wife») and «Julio. Una obra bárbara para niños bárbaros» («Julio: A Barbaric Play for Barbaric Children») (FONCREA 2018). With the company, he has presented these works in theaters across Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and much of Chile. In 2020, alongside Canary Islands artist Virginia Arencibia, he co-founded Bilateral37 Performing Arts, through which they premiered the monologue «Usted viene a oler carne quemada» («You Come to Smell Burning Flesh») by Javier and José Bizarro. This work debuted at the Municipal Theater of Ovalle, Chile, and later in December of the same year in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
In 2023, Daniel directed SECA, a free adaptation of Federico García Lorca’s classic Yerma, which premiered in September at the Miller Building in Las Palmas.
